The patents are government granted right that allows inventors to exclude others from making, using or selling the invention in the country that issued the patent.Government makes sure to help encourage inventors to spend time, money and effort to create new products, technology and so on.

In the U.S., new patents for 20 years from the date of the patent application is filed or in special cases, from the date of filing, subject to payment of maintenance fees.

After the expiration of the patent, the invention of the “public domain”, which allows anyone to make, use or sell the invention without permission or pay royalties to the creator. The government requires patents to expire because otherwise one can control the whole industry, if that person is the first to think of products.
